Jake grew up in Castleton, NY graduating from Maple Hill High School in 1998, where he was captain of the basketball team. He attended Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, and then Keuka College in Keuka Park, NY where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy. Jake has worked locally as an occupational therapist and rehabilitation director for the last 15 years. He started his own community based practice in 2014.

Jake earned his commission with the United States Army Reserves after graduating from Keuka College. He served a total of 8 years and rose to the rank of Captain. Ashby completed three missions overseas, including combat tours in Iraq (Diyala Province), Afghanistan (Khost Province), and a humanitarian mission in Malawi, Africa.

Throughout his career, Jake earned a number of military decorations including two Bronze Star Medals, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Combat Action Badge. He is a graduate of the JFK Special Warfare Center and School, successfully completing the Civil Affairs Officer Qualification Course. In Afghanistan, his unit was awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation.
In 2015 Jake earned an MBA in health care management from Union Graduate College in Schenectady, NY. He works full time as an Instructor at Maria College in the Occupational Therapy Assistant Department. Jake is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education from Creighton University. 

Jake serves on the countyís Environmental Committee and is chairman of the Veterans Committee.
He and his wife Kristy live in Castleton with their 2 children and 2 dogs. They are parishioners of Sacred Heart Church where Jake is also a catechist. He is the past Commander of VFW Post 7337 in Castleton, and is a member of the Nassau Sportsmanís Club.
