WHALETM Identification Program
WHALETM is an identification program that started in the early 1990’s by a child caregiver on the East Coast, Connie Day from Richmond, Virginia, who wondered what would happen to the children in her care in the event of a car crash. Who would identify them? How would their parents be notified? How would medical personnel know the child’s medical needs? To address these concerns, she developed the WHALETM Program. This program is recognized and used by emergency personnel in at least 34 states.
The New York State Association of Fire Chiefs of Castleton, New York and the Rensselaer County Legislature started this program locally several years ago. The Rensselaer County Legislature continues it’s efforts to promote this valuable and worthwhile program for it’s constituents.

How can I use the WHALETM Program
The WHALE Program is a child identification program that attaches emergency information to a child safety seat, providing emergency personnel with vital information in the event the driver of the vehicle is incapacitated.
It is easy to participate in the program. All you need to do is complete the information label and place the self adhesive stickers on your car windows and child safety seat.
Identification Label - fill in all pertinent information on the label (child’s name, date of birth, medical history and emergency contacts). To ensure privacy of these personal facts, affix the label to the back of the car seat where it will not be visible from outside of the vehicle.
Two WHALE safety seat stickers - Two stickers include the WHALE logo and should be affixed to the sides of the safety seat where they can be easily seen.
Two WHALE vehicle window stickers - Two stickers include the WHALE logo and should be attached to the inside of the rear side windows of the vehicle. This lets the rescue workers know that the occupants participate in the WHALE program and that they can find important information on the back of the child safety seat.
As your children often ride with other adult caregivers, it is important to make sure all caregivers that would transport your child are aware of this program. Please contact the Rensselaer County Legislature for additional sticker kits.
